Chicken Breeds: Super Cold Hardy
Backyard Chickens: Super Cold Hardy Chicken Breeds
The super cold hardy chicken breeds listed on this page are the top cold hardy breeds from our more extensive Cold Hardy Chickens list. While the larger list contains breeds generally known to tolerate cold weather, this list of super cold hardy chickens are known to handle below freezing temperatures with ease.
The breeds on this page are not only generally known for being cold hardy, they also met the following criteria: heavy body type, heavy feathering and small pea, cushion or rose combs less vulnerable to frostbite.
As a bonus, cold hardy breeds are among the best friendly chickens for the backyard flock!
Note about Brahmas: Brahma chickens do well in cold, dry climates, but their feathered legs can freeze in climates that are both cold and wet.
This list is a work in progress and very much incomplete, but we are adding new breeds every week!
Note: Breeders come up with new colors every year, and many are not recognized by the APA. The colors listed for each breed are often just a few of the many colors available!
