If you’ve only had regular cranberry sauce before, you’re in a for real treat with orange cranberry sauce.

We like to use honey rather than sugar. Although it is more expensive, it adds it own unique flavor profile to the cranberry sauce. It’s sweeter, which is important with the tart cranberries, not to mention the health benefits. You can substitute part of the honey with sugar to reduce the ingredient cost for this orange cranberry sauce recipe.

Orange Cranberry Sauce Recipe

  • 2 10oz bags fresh or frozen cranberries
  • 3-4 cups water
  • zest and juice of 1 large orange
  • 1/3 cup cornstarch, tapioca starch or arrowroot
  • 1 1/2 cups honey, or 1/2 cup honey plus 1 cup sugar

Place cranberries and 3 cups water in a large pot on the stove. Bring to a boil, and simmer until the cranberries are soft, adding more water if needed to keep cranberries submerged.

In a small bowl, blend the cornstarch, tapioca starch or arrowroot with fresh orange juice.

Once the cranberries are tender, use a potato masher to crush the fruit into a chunky sauce.

Remove the pot from the stove. Stir in the orange juice mixture and return to the stove, cooking on low until the sauce is thick and clear.

Tip: If using tapioca or arrowroot, be sure to remove the pot from the stove as soon as the sauce thickens. Overcooking will cause tapioca or arrowroot to loose their thickening ability.

Let the cranberry sauce cool slightly before adding orange zest and honey or sugar.

Cool and chill.
