Seed Envelopes: Free Printable for Seed Saving

A growing group of gardeners is going back to saving their own garden seeds. Seed saving not only saves money, but gives you a way to collect rare varieties and keep growing your favorites year after year! These free printable seed envelopes are a great way to store your seeds!

While seed envelopes can be purchased, they are expensive if you need very many. Personally, I save seeds to save money in my garden, so I’m not exactly excited about paying a lot for premade seed envelopes. For anyone else wanting to save a little money, printing your own seed envelopes is what I do and it’s a great option!

These seed packets are truly free, no strings attached! You don’t need to enter your email, just open the printable and print!

Storing Seeds

I like to organize my seed packets into shoe boxes with cardstock inserts to organize and separate different types of vegetables. Extra seeds that I won’t be using in the next year or two are dried more thoroughly with silica gel and stored in jars in the freezer.

Why use paper envelopes to store your seeds? Seeds need to breathe, so should never be stored in plastic for any length of time. The exception is if your seeds have been brought to an “extra dry” state using silica gel or a dehydrator on low. Extra dry seeds can be stored in an airtight glass jar (we’re not talking canning here, just tighten down the lid securely!). They can even be frozen to last even longer! Tips:

  • Add a drop of glue in each bottom corner on the back (inside) of the packet. This will keep small seeds from falling through.
  • Make sure the glue is completely dry before filling seed envelopes
  • Double check for any holes in the seed envelopes before adding small seeds!
  • It’s easier to write on the seed packet before putting any seeds in!
